Nik's Travel Adventures
From the moment I first swung my legs over the back of a bike I knew I was hooked for life. Viewing the world from the back of a motorcycle is by far, the most rewarding experience of my life.
I wanted to share with you my first ride, & our favourite place to continue to visit... infact we love the countryside so much , we have now moved to the area to enjoy its swings & curves at a moments good riding weather.
Windsor to Spencer for Lunch
We head out of the city, towards Windsor up the WINDSOR Rd, leaving suburbia behind... the land starts to open up & there is a sense of breathing space around the homes.
Arriving at Windsor, take a left turn at the round-about & pull into the beginning of the main street. Theres plenty of bike parks outside the Mcquarie Arms.
Gloria Jeans is our local... the girls are friendly, coffee is consistant & conversation is plesantly country townesque. Windsor is the beginning of the Hawkesbury River & its a place familys have brought their kids to ski for years. Iits a laid back country town with a fab Bakehouse pie shop & on Sundays the main street of the mall is turned into a marketplace.
Heading off...back onto the bike & heading left at the roundabout.... down the hill, over the bridge & glimpsing our first view of the river. We slip along past the amazing turf farms, rich fertile land & luxurious green lawns being farmed for suburbia .
Heading into Wilberforce we take a right turn towards Sackville. Take this countryside at a slow pace, rumbling through at 60km/hr past the award winning local butchers ( where you get the best eye fillet in the whole country) and head up over the hill to Ebenezer. The road swings & turns, wandering past alpaca farms, scrub & open pastures. Follow the signs, stop in to the Oldest church in Australia... the very pretty but tiny Ebenezer church. Its well worth the detour.
The first ferry is a little further up the way, and the road speed limits changes several times. But who's in a rush... its beautiful countryside to take in & our bobbers seem to love the cruisey pace.
There's some beautiful tarred roads on the otherside of the ferry as it heads off up the hill through the open bush & forest. There are some long sweeping corners & a wonderful piece of road that draws you along a ridge high above the Hawkesbury. We rumble into the lookout & idle..... the scenery makes you really draw a breath & appreciate the space that Australia has to offer.
From here its down to Wiseman's Ferry, one of Sydney's most popular motorcycle haunts. There's some tight right-hand hairpins and a surprising left hander at the bottom of the hill. Continue down past the pub & wait for the next ferry to transport you to the other side of the river.
I love this next piece of road.. trust me, its really pretty and worth taking in... there is a canvas of colours, the sun flickers as you head through light & shady spots. Deep winding corners & sweet stretches that echo my bobbers vance hines pipes all the way across the river & back. Take care on the single lane bridge & the stretch of road that can occasionally flood after heavy rain. During summer, the holiday homes that stretch down to the river are bubbling with families & the hawkesbury is dotted with skiers & boats til late in the day.
But remember, I promised you a great lunch.. and you're not far away now.
Spencer town... 10 houses, a warf and a great general store, appears like an oasis in the desert from around the corner... Boasting the best burgers & coffee on the river, Here's my suggestion... the chicken schnitzel & caesar salad burger & an icey cold beer.... ooops I mean coffee!
Now the coolest thing about the spencer general store is the outdoor 'pub'. The locals have affectionally setup under the big old tree a place to settle on a warm afternoon, alongside the river & warf. Carry your precious lunch cargo across the road & find a shady spot along side a local & chow down!
In a Nutshell...Travel Time from Windsor is a casual hour & a half ride through the prettiest riverside country. Begin with coffee at Windsor , take a scenic break at the lookout ay Wisemans Ferry & hit Spencer for lunch. Spring is the best time to ride through here... so take my cue & head off this weekend.... you'll love it. We might even see you there!!
